  • Pansori, a notable genre of Korean traditional music, is a vocal music in which the singer narrates a long story, combining singing and aniri (descriptive speech) to the rhythm of a buk (barrel drum) played by a gosu (drummer). During a pansori performance, the gosu also emits chuimsae (verbal exhortations) such as ‘Jochi!’ and ‘Eolssigu!’ which perk up the performance while he is playing the buk. This is a very important element along with the precise rhythm created by beating the buk. Only five pansori madang (full stories) based on Confucian ideas, i.e., the three bonds and five relationships of Confucianism, have been handed to the present day, namely, Simcheongga, which is a story about filial piety and affection; Chunhyangga, a classic tale about marital fidelity; Sugungga, a story concerning loyalty to the king; Jeokbyeokga, which deals with loyalty to one’s friends; and Heungbuga, about brotherly affection.
