  • The ajaeng is a traditional string instrument which is played by drawing a bow across the strings. It has been played since the Goryeo Dynasty, since the reign of King Seongjong of the Joseon Dynasty, it has been used in hyangak (Korean music) and dangak (Dang music – Chinese music). The front side of the instrument is made of Paulownia wood while the back has a box-shape similar to the geomungo. It is played by drawing a bow across strings made of forsythia wood shaved and painted with pine resin. It has a deep, lasting tone, so it is mainly used in wind instrument ensembles. There are two kinds of ajaeng: the jeongak ajaeng, which is used in court music, and the sanjo ajaeng, which is smaller than the jeongak ajaeng and is used for sinawi, folk music, sanjo, and so on. The ajaeng major of our school was set up in 2010.
