  • The geomungo, a traditional Korean string instrument also known as the hyeongeum, was invented by Wang San-ak in the Goguryeo period. With sixteen convex frets and six strings, the geomungo is played with the right hand by plucking or slapping the strings with a short bamboo stick called a suldae, while the left hand is used to press on the strings over the convex frets. While the sound of the gayageum is feminine, the geomungo’s may be said to be masculine. According to the curriculum of the geomungo major, 1st grade students learn the basic techniques for playing the geomungo, as well as yeomillak (a court song) and suyeonjangjigok; 2nd grade students learn yuchosinjigok and sanjo; and 3rd grade students learn yuchosinjigok, chwita, and sanjo.
