  • The gayageum, one of the two most representative native Korean traditional string instruments along with the geomungo, was invented by King Gasil of the Gaya Confederacy. However, during a war in the Gaya Confederacy, a Gaya musician named U Reuk took a gayageum with him when exiled to the Silla Dynasty, so the gayageum eventually became known as Silla’s representative instrument. The gayageum has twelve strings made of twisted silk that are attached to a resonator board, which is made from paulownia wood, and anjok (bridges) which serve to support the strings and adjust the tuning (pitch). The beopgeum or pungnyu gayageum is used for jeongak (standard music), while the sanjo gayageum is played in traditional folk music and especially sanjo music (scattered melodies). The sanjo gayageum was invented by Kim Changjo in the 19th century as a smaller form of the beopgeum, thus enabling the playing of faster passages. The gayageum is a sophisticated, feminine instrument with a very clear sound. First-grade students learn how to play the pungnyu gayageum while second and third-grade students learn the pungnyu gayageum and sanjo gayageum
